Connecting to the Cluster
There are two ways to connect to Ada. Both require an Ada account and a connection to the campus network (on campus or via the VPN).
Open OnDemand and its interactive applications are beta features.
| SSH | Open OnDemand | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | A terminal (built into macOS and Windows) | A web browser |
| What you get | A command-line shell on the head node | A web dashboard with file management, job management, a shell, and interactive applications (VS Code, Jupyter, RStudio) running on the compute nodes |
| Best for | Users comfortable with the command line, scripting and automation | Users new to HPC or the command line, and interactive work |
You can use both: they share the same account, files and jobs. For example, you might develop an analysis in Jupyter via Open OnDemand and then submit many copies of it as batch jobs from an SSH session.
